Life expectancy is the number of years that we expect to live based on population statistics. It depends on your current age and gender.

Actuaries compile mortality statistics and have developed age and gender-related tables that estimate life expectancy.

Estimate Your Life Expectancy

At birth, life expectancy is about 81 years for a male and 84 years for a female. Life expectancy increases as you get older. This is because you survived up to now, while others have not, so there is a good chance that the duration of your life will exceed this average at birth.

Life expectancy are based on historical statistics adjusted for current longevity trends. These statistics form a bell curve, from which we can estimate the odds of survival (called “probability”).

Your odds of living until age 83 are 55%.
Your odds of living until age 88 are 34% .
Your odds of living until age 93 are 15% .

Odds of survival

You can look up your odds at each age in the future. Odds follow the familiar bell curve pattern. If you put your mouse over a bar, you will see the odds for a particular year. The first few years may show odds at 100%. Note that this is due to rounding: they are actually between 99.5% and just below 100%. Odds are never at 100% when it comes to life expectancy!
